GROUP COUNSELING

Group counseling gives individuals the opportunity to learn new coping techniques, practice their communication skills, and gain hope and strength from their peers.  In group therapy, individuals can connect with other individuals who are facing similar struggles.  Group counseling involves sessions led by trained professionals who help to cultivate a safe, supportive environment where individuals can discuss various topics.

Topics vary depending on the format of the meeting but common subjects include:

  • Education on substance abuse

  • Managing stressful situations

  • Shame, loneliness, and other difficult emotions

  • Anger Management

  • Indentifying and learning healthy coping skills

  • Living with grief and emotional trauma

  • Forming and maintaining healthy relationships

  • Understanding codependency

  • Dealing with mental illness (depression, anxiety, social phobias, bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric disorders)

Types of Group Counseling

  • Psychoeducational Groups are designed to educate individuals about a specific topic such as substance abuse, mental health, self-esteem or anger management.  This form of group is typically structured with a facilitator and/or co-facilitator and at least two or more individuals in the group setting.  The facilitator(s) can utilize videos, role play, self-help assignments or handouts to educate individuals on the discussed topic.

  • Process Groups are designed to discuss in detail topics in order to promote growth and change in individuals.  This form of group can be unstructured at times as individuals in the group are welcome to bring any issues to the group setting that are deemed important.  There is a facilitator and/or co-facilitator that will lead the group in a safe and confidential environment.  The facilitator(s) can utilize videos, role play, self-help assignments or handouts to process the identified topic with the individuals.
