FAMILY COUNSELING

Family counseling assists families with identify underlying issues that are creating conflict within the family dynamic.  Family counseling is beneficial for family members and assist with learning about the impact that his or her actions have on others, and it teaches families how to effectively communicate and function.  

 

Family counseling can address various topics such as:

 

  • Changes in the family dynamics 

  • Mental health 

  • Parenting issues

  • Trauma 

  • Substance abuse

  • Financial stressors 

  • Couple relationship 

  • Adolescent behavioral concerns

  • Blended family support

 

Types of Family Counseling Approaches

 

  • Family Behavior Therapy addresses problems that affect the entire family. The goal is to reduce risk factors such as unemployment, family conflict, addiction, abuse and conduct issues. Clinician may utilize techniques such as therapeutic contracts, agenda setting and modeling behavior.

 

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques are designed to assist members of the family with changing their thinking or behavior in order to reduce or eliminate problems that have been identified as disruptive to the family.  Clinician may assign homework tasks, engage in role playing with the family or implement relaxation activities.

  • Systemic Family Therapy places emphasis on the entire family’s feelings as a whole.  This approach focuses on the process of interaction between the family members in hopes of uncovering barriers to the family dynamic.  Once the clinician has an understanding of the family dynamic, they can work to shift the barriers to a position that is less damaging.    

 

  • Supportive Therapy helps family members discuss problems that are affecting the family as a whole.  This approach encourages family members to discuss issues in a safe and open environment.  The clinician is able to assist the family with improving communication, resolving conflicts and/or decreasing arguments.
